Job Title Trustee- Fundraising Volunteer Role

We are looking for someone with a proven background in commercial fundraising to join African Adventures Foundation’s board of trustees.

Introduction to African Adventures Foundation

African Adventures Foundation is a registered charity set up in 2013 to provide support to 29 schools in developing areas of Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar.

These schools provide education, health and food security, and social support to young people whose access to these basic services would otherwise be very limited. African Adventures Foundation helps by funding food security programmes, the construction of important school facilities, and hygiene projects that will benefit children’s health and education. Our mission is to provide more children with a quality education and better opportunities in life.

Charity trustees have overall responsibility and accountability for their charity which includes Fundraising. All AAF trustees play a key role in ensuring our fundraising reflects our values, through our approach to raising funds whilst acting lawfully and ethically. We must build and maintain public confidence and trust in our charity, making donors and supporters feel respected and valued.

Volunteer Trustee role

  • Ensure a good understanding of the charity’s governing document, and that it is being followed at all times.
  • Suggest relevant changes/additions to the governing document, if needed.
  • Raise any concerns relating to non-compliance of the governing document.
  • Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for African Adventures Foundation.

What we are looking for

  • A good understanding of AAF and our operations
  • A proven background in commercial fundraising
  • Willingness to challenge, particularly concerning matters of governance and our approaches to fundraising
  • A good knowledge of governance matters
  • Experience and/or a good understanding of charities

Responsibilities of all trustees

  • Provide advice and support in enhancing AAFs fundraising streams
  • Support and provide advice on AAF’s purpose, vision, goals, and activities.
  • Understand AAF’s purpose as set out in its governing document and how it benefits those it aims to support.
  • Ensure AAF complies with its governing document.
  • Ensure AAF complies with charity law requirements.
  • Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
  • Oversee AAF’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate their progress.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
  • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively.
  • Review and approve African Adventures Foundation’s financial statements.
  • Provide support and challenge to African Adventures’ CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
  • Keep abreast of changes in AAF’s operating environment.
  • Contribute to reviews of African Adventures Foundation’s operations .
  • Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
  • Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect African Adventures Foundation’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
  • Contribute to the broader promotion of African Adventures Foundation’s objectives, aims, and reputation by applying your skills and knowledge.

Terms of appointment

  • Trustees are appointed for a 2-year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 6 years.
  • This is a voluntary position

Time commitment (Estimated at one day every 2 months)

  • Attending 5 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held in person at our UK office – 4 Crescent House, Yonge Close, Eastleigh, SO50 9SX.
  • Flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.
  • Attending an annual half day strategy session.
