Make an Impact

After safety, the most important part of your trip is the work you do at your partner school, and this is central to how we plan your trip. We support schools because we believe that education is by far the most effective way to help alleviate long-term poverty.

Imhotep Charter High School STEM Program – led Shirley Posey, Director of STEM.

With a focus on solving climate change and environmental issues, STEM Ambassadors, from Imhotep Charter High School, travelled to Ghana in 2023 to provide access to clean water for over 3,000 students at five of our partner schools through their water filtration project.

Since their initial trip, the group has returned to the Volta region each year, expanding their project at our partner schools. They have introduced an innovative hydroponic system that allows crops to grow without soil, 3D-printed a prosthetic limb for a young girl they met during a previous visit and organized medical screenings through pop-up pharmacies to help combat illnesses caused by contaminated water.

Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School

With the goal of developing their students into global citizens, Sankofa travelled to Zanzibar, where their students provided service to Ubago Primary School.

The group made a real tangible difference to the learning environment at Ubago by fixing the ceilings and painting both the interior and exterior walls of two classrooms.

Sankofa students also took on the role of teaching assistants and sports coaches at Ubago, teaching frisbee and parachute games and providing 1:1 support to students in an overcrowded classroom.

Are you ready for an adventure of a lifetime?

  • “Instead of teaching students just about coding and robotics, we look at how we can solve problems in the community through science, technology, engineering, and math. We want to power communities with voices to be advocates for change and develop innovative solutions to solve real problems.”

Shirley Posey, Director of STEM at Imhotep Charter High School
  • "Even though we weren’t at Ubago for a long time, we found a new community—one that reminded me of my school. The people there welcomed us with open arms and open minds. They shared their culture with us and showed us how they teach their students, and in return, we shared our own ways of learning and teaching."

Volunteer, Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School
  • "This trip has reinforced my belief in the power of education and the transformative impact of international experiences. Seeing my students come together to volunteer at Jubilee Academy was nothing short of inspirational. Their dedication, compassion, and enthusiasm every day made me so proud. From playing with the children, teaching dance, painting the newly built kitchen and front gate and preparing graduation lunch, they left an incredible mark on the community."

    Leanne, Group Leader
  • “Working with students and teachers in a different cultural setting helped me develop my adaptability and communication skills. I taught Maths, Science and PE lessons and helped refurbish three classrooms. This experience showed me just how impactful education can be. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and excited to carry the lessons that I learnt throughout this trip with me.”

    Jennifer, Volunteer
  • "It was an incredibly eye-opening experience that taught me a lot of valuable skills and gave us an idea of the culture in Zanzibar. Creating memories I will cherish forever."

    Isobelle, Volunteer
  • “I was not expecting this trip to be as life-changing as it was. I am only 15 and I believe that I have achieved so much in such a small space of time. I think that everyone should push themselves out of their comfort zone to experience the reality of the world around us.”
