This summer, our Ghana team welcomed our biggest programme to date, with hundreds of volunteers heading to the Volta region to make a lasting impact at our partner schools.
Volunteers were welcomed with open arms by our partner schools, with students showing them around the school on their first day. “We had a local performance – with drums, dancing and singing – and before we knew it, their staff and students had us up and joining in. This was truly an experience we wouldn’t forget.” Group Leader.
Little Roses
This summer, volunteers have been making fantastic progress at Little Roses to help them fulfil their goal of converting temporary classrooms into permanent brick structures to reduce flooding.
Volunteers threw themselves into the building and renovation role and helped to mould blocks, mix concrete and lay the blocks to create the outer structure of a classroom.
Constructing a classroom is thirsty work! Volunteers enjoy a coconut to celebrate all their hard work.
Alongside building a classroom, volunteers also made an impact inside them, teaching a range of subjects.

The Lord’s Academy
Our volunteers left their mark at The Lord’s Academy by levelling the floor of the school compound, making it a safer environment for the students. Volunteers from a Dorset school mix mortar, which they then used to screed the floor.
Alongside renovating the school site, volunteers delivered lessons to the primary school students, with one maths lesson focusing on shapes.
Dedzidi School
This summer, volunteers have been making progress on our two-storey classroom block project at Dedzidi School, with six classrooms completed out of eight!
Volunteers mixed sand, water and cement together to form blocks which are needed to complete the final block.
“Our goal is to encourage more children from our local area to attend school. To achieve this, African Adventure is supporting us to expand our school by increasing the number of classrooms so we can cater for more students and reduce overcrowding in lessons.” Elizabeth, Headteacher.

Increasing security at four of our partner schools
A big focus for some of our partner schools is to increase the security of their school site and provide one clear entrance to the school. By having one entrance, teachers will be able to identify students who are late and then work with them to improve their attendance so they don’t miss out on vital learning time. To achieve this, we are working with the schools to build perimeter walls around the school sites.
Volunteers helped dig the foundations for the perimeter wall at Dziedzorve School and then started to mould blocks which will be used in the build.
Our volunteers picked up the baton from our previous groups and continued to mould bricks to construct a perimeter wall at Dornorgbor School, Shalom School and Ashata School.
Constructing libraries at three of our partner schools
This summer, volunteers made significant progress with constructing two libraries, one at Rhema Abuita and the other at Aklorborzi School. Volunteers helped to mix concrete and laid the bricks to build the outer walls.
Construction of a third library also started this summer at Woe EP., where volunteers helped to mould bricks for the build.
Donations
Thank you to all our volunteers who kindly brought donations to our partner schools this summer. From shoes and clothes to stationery and toys, our volunteers have provided students with the basic necessities that their families can’t always provide for them.
Adventure weekends
You can’t visit Ghana without immersing yourself in traditional West African culture. After a busy day volunteering at the schools, our groups took part in traditional Ghanaian drumming lessons and visited the beautiful beaches. At the weekend, some of our groups embarked on our Volta Adventure Weekend, where they visited a protected monkey sanctuary before relaxing in a lodge for an overnight stay and finishing with a trip to the tallest waterfall in Ghana, Wli Falls, the next day. Our other groups opted for our Cape Coast Adventure Weekend, which saw them embark on a tour of Cape Coast Castle and then finish the day relaxing in a lodge. Before heading back, our groups hiked through Kakum National Park, where they had lunch over a crocodile pond.
Thank you to everyone who was a part of our Summer Programme, helping to make a lasting impact at our partner schools.
