Our Easter programme has been a huge success in Kenya! Our most recent groups of volunteers were spread across many of our partner projects in the city of Nakuru, and Alex, our East Africa Director, and his team enjoyed meeting some new groups and reuniting with old friends.

Whilst some of our groups flew to Kenya in late March, we welcomed our In-Country Kenya Co-Ordinator, Fred, to the UK for the first time as he joined us for our 10-Year Anniversary Dinner. After a busy week meeting with old friends, visiting schools, and sightseeing, he returned to Kenya to help the team with the rest of the Easter programme.

Three of our partner schools benefitted from teaching support, provided by a group of PGCE students from Hampshire. The trip was deemed a success by the group leader, Ros, who said: “The trip always has massive impact on the students that we take. It lives up to expectations and we always want to go back!”. Joel, one of the PGCE students, added: “It has aided my teaching immeasurably, and has really opened my eyes to the poverty and struggles in Kenya, as well as how beautiful and proud a country it is.” The students used the trip to enhance their own teaching skills, as well as experience teaching in a different country.

Many of our partner projects were grateful for the help they received in April. Everton in the Community made a big impact during their first trip with us. The group volunteered at West End Destiny Academy (formerly Ransam School) and, after cementing two classroom floors, the volunteers decided to raise enough money to install a water tank, providing the school with a reliable source of running water. The group also helped with renovation work at Jubilee Academy, as well as teaching at both schools. Lia, who was part of the Everton group, said: “This has been the best experience of my life so far, a real eye-opening trip! I would revisit any time!”

Bygrace School benefitted from help with the construction of a new classroom, thanks to a school group from Kent, whilst another group was able to help with the building of an administration block at Chaddy Mission School. As well as building new classrooms, volunteers were kept busy renovating existing classrooms, with plenty of painting and decorating completed by our volunteer groups. Volunteers painted classrooms at The Walk Centre, Mama Kerry Hope Academy, and Cherish School.

Away from volunteering, there were plenty of activities to keep our volunteers busy. Some groups had opted for our famous Rift Valley Adventure Day, giving our volunteers a whistle-stop tour of Kenya. The day included a safari, as well as a visit to the Equator (providing a good photo opportunity) and a hike at Thomson Falls. One of the volunteers, Evie, said: “It was an amazing experience. The trip helped me learn and see a different way of life whilst being able to make a difference.”

Some groups opted to add our Maasai Mara Safari Weekend to their trip. This was a great chance for our volunteers to see Kenya’s beautiful wildlife, and to learn more about the Maasai tribe by immersing themselves into Kenyan culture. Another optional extra was the Taste of Kenya Day, which offers volunteers the chance to learn how to prepare and cook the local cuisine. One of the volunteers, Faye, concluded: “The trip was eye-opening, and the most amazing experience was had in Kenya by our group. I really cannot put into words the values and life lessons I have learnt in this beautiful country with such beautiful people. Thank you, African Adventures.”
