This year marked 10 years of African Adventures working in Zanzibar and also our biggest summer programme to date there! Thanks to our volunteers, so much has been achieved at our partner schools, which provide an education to over 17,000 students combined.
With our programmes growing and more volunteers to help bring our work to life, we partnered with three new schools, which some of our summer groups visited for the first time, along with volunteers picking up the baton and continuing the development work at our other three partner schools.
Read on to hear about our Zanzibar Summer Programme and everything that has been achieved…
Flora Nursery and Primary School
Flora Nursery and Primary School, one of our new partnerships for 2024, welcomed their first group of volunteers this summer.
The roofs of the classrooms at Flora are made of tin, causing the classrooms to get extremely hot as the sun beats down on them.
Our volunteers helped to install new wooden boards, creating a cooler learning environment for the students.
The group also provided teaching support, leading English, Maths and History lessons.
Kijito Upele School
A new project was underway this summer at Kijito, to help them to achieve their aim of improving the ground outside their nursery classrooms so students can get to lessons safely.
Our volunteers helped to lay a new, level concrete floor, which they completed in the courtyard.
Their work didn’t stop there! They then painted the outside of two classrooms, making them brighter and more inviting for learning.
Volunteers did a fantastic job supporting the delivery of lessons and teaching a range of subjects, including English, Maths, Science, IT, and Geography. The volunteers also enjoyed a lesson of their own during their lunch break from their trip host, Imani, who taught them some basic phrases in Swahili.
Al-Ikhwan Nursery & Primary School
Al-Ikhwan, another of our new partner schools for 2024, welcomed their first group of volunteers with a whole school ceremony.
“This trip was absolutely amazing, we were made to feel so welcome and so many memories.” Daniel, Volunteer.
The group of year nine students played a big part in renovating the school’s facilities and improving the classroom environment by relaying a broken and uneven floor in two classrooms.
Alongside teaching in the classrooms, volunteers ran multiple sports lessons and joined in birthday celebrations.
The group also cheered England on in the Euros, all the way from Zanzibar.
Ubago Primary School
Ubago Primary School, who we have been partnered with for just over a year now, welcomed their second group of volunteers to their school.
The group helped renovate the headteacher’s office by tiling the floor and fixing the door.
Kinuni School
This summer, volunteers continued renovating the classrooms by installing 10 iron windows, which were then painted. Also, they laid a new, level concrete floor on half of the preschool ground.
With classes consisting of up to 100 students, volunteers did a great job delivering engaging lessons, capturing the student’s attention.
Thank you to all our volunteers who were part of our 2024 summer programme and helped to make a long-term sustainable impact at our partner schools.
We are looking forward to welcoming our last groups of the year in October to Zanzibar. Stay tuned to hear about what they get up to!
“An Incredible experience that will stay with me for life.” Seth, Volunteer
