The-Gambia

The Gambia is known for its warm hospitality, rich culture, and beautiful river landscapes, but life can be challenging for many communities.

The country has a small but growing economy, with tourism, farming, and fishing playing key roles. While there have been positive developments in recent years, The Gambia remains one of the least developed countries in the world, with very high poverty rates.

We work in communities across Greater Banjul, a coastal region where access to education can be affected by overcrowded schools and limited resources. Many families rely on informal or low-income work, and children may take on responsibilities at home or contribute to family income, which can impact their education. By working closely with local schools, we support initiatives that help children stay engaged in learning and continue their education for longer, creating better opportunities for the future.

Did you know?

The Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa and is often called the ‘Smiling Coast of Africa’. It’s also a remarkable destination for nature lovers, with over 600 recorded bird species.

Around 40% the population is under the age of 14, placing increasing pressure on schools and resources. As communities continue to grow, ensuring consistent access to quality education remains a key challenge.

We work with a range of schools across Greater Banjul, including both government-funded and non-government-funded schools. Across the schools we support, resources can be stretched. Classrooms are often busy, and access to materials such as textbooks, equipment, and learning space can be limited, creating challenges for both students and teachers.

Volunteers travelling to The Gambia with African Adventures have the opportunity to help teach in classrooms, coach sports and get involved in our building programmes, which focus on developing key infrastructure in schools. Find out more about what you can do.

A Typical Trip

Every day in The Gambia, extraordinary experiences are sure to unfold.

The Gambia is a welcoming destination, where it doesn’t take long to feel part of the community. With its warm climate, friendly atmosphere, and diverse wildlife, each day brings something new to discover.

Typically, our trips to The Gambia last between 1 and 3 weeks. Volunteers spend Monday to Friday in their partner school, working during normal school hours and supporting local teachers in the classroom.

Weekends, when schools are closed, offer time to experience more of the country at your own pace. Whether that’s exploring nearby areas, spending time by the coast, or joining optional organised activities, it’s a chance to better understand life in The Gambia beyond the classroom.
