February marked the start of our 2025 Easter programme, during which 630 volunteers travelled to Ghana, Kenya, and Zanzibar, collectively completing over 17,000 hours of volunteering at our partner schools.
Read on to learn about our Easter Programme and all that has been accomplished…
Ghana
Dedzidi School
This Easter, volunteers have been making progress on our two-storey classroom block project at Dedzidi School by moulding bricks and laying the concrete floor for one of the classrooms. Six classrooms have been completed out of the eight, and we can’t wait to see the remaining two classrooms in use very soon!
Tegbi EP
Tegbi EP welcomed back a returning group who have been volunteering there for over three years. The volunteers worked as a team to mould blocks for the new perimeter wall, which will improve the security of the school site.
The group also continued with their work, which they had started in 2024, by creating and co-delivering relationship, sexual health, and menstruation education to students. This initiative was led by a volunteer who works for a charity providing advice on sexual abuse and rape. They delivered the sessions to 300 students across Tegbi EP, Woe EP and Rhema.
“We packed in more than we ever planned! Our days were full, delivering multiple classes on healthy relationships, consent, menstrual and sexual health across three schools. It was a totally new experience for me, and I was thrilled to be asked to take part. I learned so much—not just from the brilliant team of educators that I travelled with, but also from the incredible students we worked with.” Suzi, Volunteer.
Imhotep Charter High School
STEM Ambassadors from Imhotep Charter High School returned to the Volta region for the third year to continue their vital water filtration work at our partner schools and their communities.
This year, Imhotep partnered with OKB Hope Foundation to tackle health equity and water insecurity. They undertook medical screening at Tegbi Clinic and Tegbi EP, serving over 1,600 people.
Through the pop-up pharmacies, they found high rates of typhoid, teens with chest pain, widespread rashes and fatigue. The cause of these illnesses was contaminated water. While the OKB medical team and some of the STEM volunteers addressed urgent healthcare, the other STEM volunteers deployed water filtration systems, breaking the cycle at its root.
Together, they addressed the root causes of poor health by combining medical care with sustainable access to clean water, helping to improve the attendance rate at our partner schools.
At Tegbi Birthing Clinic, the group served over 300 community members, offering blood pressure screenings, diabetes screenings, consultations, lab testing, and medications for those who needed it. They also supported 115 mothers of newborns with vital medicines and supplies, and donated a one-year supply of maternal health resources.
Future Leaders School
Volunteers worked hard cleaning the school and the compound, creating an engaging and hygienic school environment. They also painted the floors of seven classrooms.
Volunteers guided the students through a fun and interactive lesson on seasons, helping them understand the changes in weather and nature throughout the year. They also taught a healthy habits session focusing on oral hygiene. Each student received a toothbrush, allowing them to put into action what they had learned.
The group donated over 500 pairs of shoes, which were distributed to students, teachers, and non-teaching staff. Each pair was labelled to help children easily identify their shoes, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride.
Kenya
Eileen Ngochoch Primary School
2025 marks our second year of partnership with Eileen Ngochoch, and it’s fantastic to see already the progress that has been made at the school.
Volunteers continued to progress the learning environment by constructing five library bookshelves and 10 benches, which will sit 100 students during their lessons.
Love G School
Love G School welcomed their second group of volunteers, who made fantastic progress with developing the school infrastructure. Volunteers worked together to construct a new semi-permanent office for the teachers, as they had previously been working in an office that had no windows.
“Thank you to the volunteers for all the good work you did building an office for us. This new office has much more space and is much brighter.” Kennedy Nyakundi, School Director.
PGCE volunteers
The Walk Centre, Ungana Academy, and Mercy Njeri welcomed back a group of trainee teachers and undergraduate education students who taught at Primary Level. By volunteering as teaching assistants, the group were able to enhance their own learning by developing new skills to support them in their teaching careers.
Jubilee Academy
African Adventures Foundation has received grant funding to build a further two permanent classrooms at Jubilee Academy, which will accommodate grades three and four. Currently, once students finish grade two, they must leave and find a new free school to attend, which results in many children dropping out of education altogether. The new classrooms will help to keep children in education and also ensure they receive a nutritious meal each day through our foundation’s food security programme.
Volunteers made a fantastic start to the permanent classroom project by helping to dig the foundations, and also donated uniforms for the students.
Mercy Njeri Primary School
Mercy’s aim is to improve the learning environment for their students. Volunteers got to work and continued the classroom renovation project by breaking up a broken classroom floor, mixing cement and then laying tiles with the help of a builder to create a new floor.
Gracekids Education Centre
Gracekids educates 50 nursery students aged between 3.5 and 5 years old and is severely underfunded. The aim for Gracekids is to develop its infrastructure, which includes the construction of a kitchen, as it currently has no facilities to prepare food for the students.
Volunteers worked hard over their 10-night trip and completed the construction of a semi-permanent kitchen.
Nakuru Grace Academy
Nakuru Grace educates over 200 students and has 10 classrooms, but four are incomplete and cannot be used. Volunteers helped by continuing the construction of a classroom that was previously started during our October Programme.
The group also kindly donated a water tank to the school, providing them with a second source of water to ensure they have sufficient water for the school day.
“We are grateful to the group for donating to us a water tank, as water was a struggle for us with only having one tank but now because of this donation students are able to access water. The group also kindly donated tablets, stationery, plates and balls. Previously we were having challenges carrying out PE lessons and we had to conduct our lessons orally as we didn’t have enough stationery items but now students are able to write in their books and learn!” Margaret Iminza and Kvin Omondi, School Directors.
Ungana Academy
Volunteers worked hard at Ungana Academy, where they tiled the floors of the grade five and six classrooms to improve the learning environment.
Alongside the construction work, they taught a range of lessons, including a fun and engaging spelling lesson, which was shown by the students going up to the board and trying it themselves.
Outside of the classroom, the volunteers brought lots of energy and laughter as they organised a musical chairs game and a tug-of-war.
The group provided the students with complete football kits, which Penwortham AFC kindly donated.
West End Academy
The construction of a two-storey permanent classroom was completed last summer, and two groups of volunteers picked up the baton to continue the work of making the classrooms a conducive learning environment. Volunteers worked together to build desks and chairs for the teachers and students.
Students enjoyed some friendly competition while building their focus and hand-eye coordination by taking part in a darts competition organised by the volunteers.
St Trizah
The construction of a new classroom was completed last summer, along with other classrooms being renovated. To make the classroom a welcoming and comfortable space for the students, volunteers worked together to build chairs for the kindergarten learners and also painted the inside and outside of another classroom.
Volunteers also got their hands dirty, planting tree seedlings around the school grounds.
The group kindly brought a range of donations with them, including clothes, books, and stationery, which were gratefully received.
The Walk Centre
The Walk Centre welcomed two groups over the Easter Programme, and together, they completed the construction of shelves for the teacher’s office.
Volunteers shared their passion for football with the students at The Walk Centre, passing on their knowledge and skills to them.
Zanzibar
Flora Primary School
Flora welcomed their first group of 2025, who helped to construct a base around the classroom. The new base will help to strengthen the walls, ensuring the classroom is a safe learning environment for the 150 students who attend.
Volunteers also taught a range of subjects, from Maths to Science, developing their own communication skills while increasing student engagement in the classroom.
Ubago Primary School
Volunteers helped renovate two classrooms by fixing the ceilings and painting both the interior and exterior walls.
The group threw themselves into games and activities as sports coaches, where they got all the students involved in playing frisbee, parachute games and a tug of war.
Using coconut leaves that grow at Ubago School, volunteers helped students make rings, necklaces, and bracelets from them.
“Even though we weren’t at Ubago for a long time, we found a new community—one that reminded me of my school. The people there welcomed us with open arms and open minds. They shared their culture with us and showed us how they teach their students, and in return, we shared our own ways of learning and teaching.” Volunteer.
Thank you to everyone who was a part of our Easter Programme, helping to make a lasting impact at our partner schools.
